I wouldn't be too concerned with the paint itself, as long as it's adhering well to the chair...the only danger comes from actually ingesting the paint, nasally or orally...which is pretty unlikely in a normal setting..if you have a young child in the house that's teething, or a small dog that chews, these could be other reasons for concern, but just normal handling and living with these should not represent any real danger...to remove the original finish would definately affect thier value...
