How to Treat an Antique Chair

I have recently bought a pair of ~1890 French Antique chair. They are extremely lovely, but we are a little concern with its possible lead paint. We believe the paint was original, but it is starting to chip off. We would hate to return the chairs, and would like to get some advice on how to treat this situation.
