Lemon oil is a good cleaner, mild soap and water can be used so long as the moisture is quickly removed and heavey scrubbing is avoided. I often use a watco oil to remove scrtaches and with a little 0000 steel wool it can do a lot of loosing of dirt and old wax too, so this is a pretty good all around treatment. Remove all excess oil within 30 minutes and dispose of rags properly after soaking in water. Rings should be the first thing you do, some polishes will get them out, by that I mean an abrasive polish. A cream polish, as found in most grocery stores is good. I have made a decent polish with baking soda and lemon oil, work carefully in the grain direction, check often and do the entire top before you finish to give an even effect. The easiesy way to remove a water spot is with a blush remover, a spray, it softens the finish briefly to allow the moisture in the finish to evaporate, and the finish can then dry clear again. Most old finishes are shellac and can be cleared of blushes, once cleaned, with a quick wipe from an alcohol dampened cotton cloth. Do not mess around here, a once over on the blush in the direction of the grain is all. Allow to dry for fifteen minutes and repeat as needed.
