Sounds more like the Stain has faded under the finish, and there's really no easy way to correct that without getting under the finish. If the grain is filled well, sometimes you can wet sand down carefully with some 400 or 600, and then pad or spray on a few coats of shellac lightly colored with a dye stain. That will leave the clarity of the finish but tone down the color differences, but you run the risk of changing the shade/sheen to much from the rest of the piece. other than that, you'll need to get under the finish to fix it..
