you can apply any good quality waterborne finish over milk paint...I'm surprised the water spots are white, is that a clear Watco that you used?..or perhaps you were using a dark oil to simulate age? Absolute Coating's Last'n Last is one of my favorite waterbournes for coating faux painted finishes and other effects..(www.lastnlast.com) but it's getting hard to find. It has a catalyst thats available for it that increases the durability even more...although it's a great product without it, you add it to the finish right before using, and it loses it's effect after 24 hours in the unused product without adversely affecting it ....Very clear, flows out well, dries fast, looks great without a final rubout if you're good about your application cleanliness..especially since you'd probably not be building to thick a finish on this type of job...
