Just to be accurate at one point you insisted the windows were outside now. As for what is the problem here I wonder if these windows are indirect sunlight? This would cause an almost daily heating and cooling change that is a direct inducement to air shifting and this would cause humidity to migrate in and out of the wood frequently. That would definatly hasten the break down of the doomed fibers that are now just nesitating on their way to the dust bin.
