There are several wood hardeners on the market for binding whats left of the wood fibers together and as these are just hung inside for display, you could treat these frames easily and touch them up as needed. Check this- http://www.right-tool.com/pcpetwoodhar.html and there are others including !Minwax!...that makes an acetone based product.
