If it will be on a porch or protected, varnishing with a good Spar is ok.If it will be outside in direct weather, I would not varnish it...no matter what spar you use, it will start to lift and flake, (just ask any boat owner..)..an oil like a marine teak oil soaks into the pores and hardens from inside out...a varnish, of course, is a surface coating that when failed will require removal...not a fun job. There are several teak products available, go to a marine supply place.....or search Google- regards
