What you describe sounds like the moisture was high and is dropping and is causing the fibers to disentegrate. Find out what the ambient moisture history is, from it's previous locations to now. Compare this with the moisture content, present, in the wood with a moisture meter. A home inspector will have one, and can suggest a remiedee. Consevertors like 35% room humidity for antiques. Let's find out the cause and then we can find the solution, good luck, James S.
