It sounds like you have a Waterfall dresser like mine. I was reading up on veneer in the archives last night and you shouldn't sand it. Is it possible to glue it back down? I saw a product today called Veneer oil and supposedly it will rehydrate the "driest most brittle veneer" so that you can work with it to glue it back down. Maybe this will work for you.
