If the metal straps are rusty steel ones, there are products that you can paint on to the metal and they will chemically change the rust to black magnatite, which looks flat black and arrests the oxidizing process, and then you can just paste wax right over it while waxing the rest of the piece for a natural look....one was called..Extend..I think??
