Most people at this point choose to refinish. You may be able to reamalgamate the finish with a product that is often 1/4 lacquer thinner and 3/4 denatured alcohol, also sold in stores and at the Woodworkers Store, on line. This process is tricky, and I think some practice on an old piece of finished woorwork would give you some oppertunity to see what is takes. Primarily you loosen the top of the finish, work in small circular areas lifting off the old and dirty top layers. This is allowed to dry smooth, extra layers of shellac can be added and sanded smooth and polished.
