I'm not Mr. Cole, but I throw all nonoriginal nails away. The best wood joint heeds no screws or nails in it. Adding fastners to furniture weakens the wood, glue is all I have ever needed to repair almost all the thousands of pieces I have fixed over thirtyfive years. If the designer put them there I put them back, if there were subsequent changes made I try to right them. Brass screws were considered expensive weaker and unless they actually showed, ie. clock faces, they were soft steel till the 1900's came along and mass production made high quality screws rather cheep. In fact cheep enough that a brass plating could be added with out adding much extra cost, and the rest is history.
