We use a brass darkening solution that can be made from vinegar and table salt, once all the polishing is done. A faster and more dangerous darkner can be made from amonia, it will remove a little of the brass if plater so watch out, I like to just let the amonia fumes onto light brass plateing, then buff up the highlights with 0000 steel wool. If you can get it, a tinted lacquer of light walnut, in a spray can, does a nice job of hiding the bare spots, just apply in very light coats to avoid hiding the metal. Then seal with a brass lacquer to hold it all in place.
