First, you will not get good adhesion with true tung oil. Second, an orange shellac will enhance the grain for greater depth. A Danish oil will work well such as Watco Oil. Test all the items for finish first and try a scratch test with a stout adhesive to see if you are an the right track. Not all lacquers are evenly matched, the cheeper ones have lousy ingredients. Duravar is very good, and I think Crystal is pretty good also. I would wet/dry sand up to 1000 grit after about 10 coats with shellac and then french polish lacquer the last few coats and then wrap up the sheen with rotten stone and parafin oil. Look at the library or to the Luthier Society, I think they are on the web.
