It is probably a shellac finish so denatured alcohol should rmove it very easily. Make a rubber by folding a 12" square of lint free cottn and wet it with alcohol squeeze it out until it doesn't drip. Rub small areas in overlapping circles changing to a clean face on the rubber as it gets dirty. You can remove the entire finish this way or just remove the dirty portion. Then you can recoat with shellac let dry for a week and polish out with 0000 steel wool.
