Sounds like someone started to strip the top and had second thoughts or the top was cleaned excessively prior to painting. Or both. Either way some of the origional stain stain was removed making the top a lighter shade.Perhaps a good Mahogany stain will bring it back.I'am sure you'll recieve more advice on this site.
