Ok, I have recently purchased a 110 year old home and am restoring the messes made by the previous owners. I am concentrating on the doors at the moment. Here is the question...how do I tell what kind of metal my door plates are made of. They are in varying degrees of aging. They appear to be sort of a golden red like type color and age to black or green in the leafing design (or maybe that green is something they used to clean it previously?). I found a set on ebay that matches mine and they say they are brass... Are they brass? And whatever they are how would you remove rust and paint from such creatures without damaging them? This is the ebay # (3707282875) if you want to look at what I am talking about. The ones like mine are the longest set on the far right of the photo. Thanks so much for all the help!!
