In Response To: water marks? (Kim)

The finish may be exhausted and has lost it's resistance to moisture. A wax will actually help resist water so that is not where the problem is comming from. Start with some lemon oil and clean off all the old polish, Pledge, Old English, what have you. This should remove some of the blushing and bring up some more grain. After the oil has dried off you can apply a good paste wax. Should the water marks remain you may want to try a blush remover sold in spray cans at the Wood Workers Store, avaible on line, and at your local refinisher's. This will allow the moisture to evaporate and clear things up. Inspect the condition of the finish, if you feel it has worn down, clean throughly with paint thinner and a Scoth Brite pad and paper towel wipe to remove all dirt and old wax. Resatin bare spots with a matching Watco Oil, wait 36 hours. Recoat with fresh shellac, after a few good coats, light sanding in between with 320 grit. Polish with 0000 steel wool and wax with a good satin wax.
