The carving concerns me, if it is an applique the stripper may dissolve the details. The finer the carving the more likely you have a composition molding and not real wood. Use some denatured alcohol and an old tooth brush to gently clean out the finish from the hard to reach spots, since the old finish is almost certainly shellac and is easily dissolved with alcohol, this being easier on composition. Once you can see what you have you can tell more about how to proceed, rinse with clean water and wipe dry. The dents can be steamed out with a wet rag and the tip of an iron, then sand over all. You may be able to locate the filler in a good paint store, Fam O Wood is very good and comes in walnut, ask for the solvent base as opposed to the water base product. Stain first and after you have a few coats of sanding sealer you may want to try some toner to adjust the color. The Deft lacquer should produce a good finish, once cured, 48 hours, you may polish with 0000 steel wool and apply a paste wax.
