Hi Melissa,
I to am having problems with that same smell. I went to a antique store over the weekend and asked them what to do about it. She told me to go on-line to see what I could find. She did say that she was told you could soak some newspaper in vinegar and place it inside the item for awhile. It is suppose to draw out the smell. I haven't tried this yet, I thought I would look on-line first.
I don't think I would try painting the inside of the item because it decreases the value of your antique.
