How to clean and restore antique wood/copper chest

I need to know how to go about restoring (wood & embossed metal) a small wood chest (like a miniture trunk) about 3'long, 30" tall and 30" deep. Some of the wood is rotted and the metal has been painted. I am patient and want to restore it lovingly. I will only be able to work on it on my day off on Saturdays. thank you for any help carole
