From your description ist sounds like the furniture that was produced in the 1930's. You can clean it with soap anbd water don't soak it just dampen rinse and wipe dry, be very careful wher the veneer is loose as the glue used is water soluble. As far as the musty smeel try leaving it with the drawers removed an a small fan funning to blow air inside the cases. You can also was the inside of the cases with a 10% solution of household vinegar rinse and dry. If these things don't help seal the isnide of the cases with a coat of 3# cut shellac.
