as to sealing the cane i use a 1/3 cup paint thinner ( not mineral spirits) 1/3 cup boiled linseed oil and if chair is a light color such as oak , you can add 1/3 cup of same stain . mix and apply liberally and let stand for 24 hrs. wipe off with clean , lint free rag. the oil keeps the cane flexible and from drying out. this can be used on older cane but does cause some darkening in all cases. ps do this after burning off the fuzzies
