If you are not trying to remove any of the actual finish - just accumulated dirt - I have had good results with Murphy's Oil Soap; takes off the dirt without removing finish, and leaves the finish with a shine, not requiring any further steps. Just make sure to use the Oil Soap according to the directions, and do not over-rub. In certain cases, it can actually remove old finish which is in poor shape. However, in that case, you should probably strip the piece anyhow.
