ANTIQUE FURNITURE RESTORATION DISCUSSION BOARD

I have a circa 1850 Pennsylvania drop front desk with what appears to be the original finish, which is crazed to the point of obscuring the grain. It was suggested I try Howard's Restore-A-Finish, to clean and reduce the crazing. I don't want to remove or damage the existing finish, but the piece appears kind of lifeless. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
