Making Table Leaves

I'm restoring a huge mahogany dining table which once accomodated 3 18" leaves (I'm guessing here, since they're missing). As an alternative to gluing up many widths of hardwood, I was thinking of using 3/4" plywood (the smooth, 7-layer kind), gluing a breadboard edge, then veneering. I think this would maintain flatness over such expanses, as well as save me a layer of veneer on each side.

The edges have to be routed, and I think I can get better results with a breadboard edge than cross-grain on hardwood.

I'd be interested in your thoughts.

Happy Holidays.

Charlie
