You can finish the cane with any system you would for wood, the stain is the biggest challenge, since the hard case on the outside resists stain very well. The biggest problem is in the longevity of the seats, they will not last as long when finished. The thicker the finish the shorter the life span of the seat. I sometimes use an analine dye to tint the cane since it has less stiffening effect on the fibers, then a wax over that will help seal the dye, or a very light coat of lacquer will be better than wax if water is likely to be a problem, since the dye can reactivate if not sealed. The raised grain is on the spline I guess? I just sand that off. As for the torch, I singe them too but I don't wait for the cane to dry entirely, that way I reduce the chance of a scorch.
