In Response To: cane and spline removal (Doyle)

Often we remove old cane entirely by hand, it isn't to hard my way, I use a drill bit to drill 1/8" holes all the way around the old spline, one every 1/2". Next I inject warm white vinegar into these holes to soften the old glue, after thirty minutes or so, the old spline is ready to come out. With modern glue it may take longer, which is why I have started using Liquid Hide glue now on all prewoven seat replacements. It is just as strong and if old hide glue is still in the groove it mingles with the new glue so I don't have to be so particular about removing it all. Also if the chair comes back I can get the old seat out a lot easier than Alphetic Resin (yellow) glue.
