rope bed conversion

I recently purchased a mid-18th century New Jersey rope bed. It is complete except for the rope. There are holes drilled through the side rails for the rope. I would like to use the bed and also maintain its antique value. Is there a method that I can employ to mount a box spring within the existing dimensions of this bed. There are no existing slots for slats or a lip on either side rail. The antique dealer I purchased it from told me he used L-brackets with bolts mounted through the holes in the side rails on a rope bed he owns. However, I do not want to mar the patina. Any ideas and/or suggestions would be helpful.
