What you have suggested is possible but not easily done. I use a vacuume bag and vacuum pump to remove the air inside the bag and this puts a greatdeal of pressure on both sides of the break and with hot hide glue am able to repair the original layers and then veneer over the whole thing with a couple fresh layers of veneer. You can get semilar results by moulding styreen foam on both sides of the seat using waxed paper to keep the glue away from the foam. Place a stout board under the seat and lay it between two saw horses, next cut a 2x4 to reach up to the rafters overhead. Lay a large scrap of plywood on top of the seat and cram the 2x4 between this and the rafter overhead. Measure the 2x4 about an inch or two long so that you need to pound it in place, this will get you close to the pressure I get from the vacuum press. The hide glue has a long open time so you can remove all this stuff ,once briefly, after a few minutes just to make sure everything is OK. After the broken layers are back together use the same method to reveneer the seat, take all the finish off first, the old hide glue will reset with the new glue but no other glue will do this, good luck, James.
