Never use steel wool on glass, it will leave fine scratches that will be almost impossible to remove. I resilver mirrors and believe me any abrasive can scratch glass, even a razor blade if not used properly. I can remove paint with common amonia and polish away the dirt with baking soda and water. If the glass can be removed this will allow you to strip with most any chemicel you find convient, stripper or even oven cleaner or draino. Remember they put acid in glass bottles, chemically its almoct industable, but a dirty fingeer can scratch it. If the glass is old it may be nearly irreplaceable.
