ANTIQUE FURNITURE RESTORATION DISCUSSION BOARD

Laquer, shellac, varnish?

Dear Jim,

I bought a "mission" oak chair and got the paint spots off. There were small spots where the finish has been removed, so I took your advice and got a "stain marker" but it says that afterwards I should top coat these spots with the appropriate finish. How can I figure out what the appropriate finish is...shellac, varathane, etc? The chair is Mission style oak and approximately from the '30s or '40s.

Thanks!
