I wonder about someone who cannot or will not attempt to match the old veneer and is wanting to transform your sewing machine into something far from what it is. It is not that difficult to a skilled restorer to match old veneer, in fact, a compentant restorer will have some old matching veneer in an old box in the corner or know where to get some. Even if 50% of the veneer is missing it can still be matched well after refinishing. Only you would know where the repairs were.
Acetone in the nail polish remover should have affected the finish. The original finish would have been a varnish of some type. Varnish is simply a resin in an oil and has been around for 100's of years.
Do you have any good pictures of the damage. If so, there is a lot of talent on this board and I am sure that several of the participants would request copies by private email to help you assess the damage and guide you...
