In Response To: Antique trunk (Carol Anne)

Carol,

I wire brush the metal, clean the wood with lacquer thinner and lightly sand and/or scrape it depending on the condition of the wood. Then coat the wood with shellac, and metal too if you wish. Paint the metal black (I like black). To highlight any raised or embossed parts of the metal I use a product called rub and buff, it comes in a small tube. You put a small, very small, bit on your finger, like rubbing your finger across a stick of butter, then rub your finger across, lightly across, the raised parts or any parts you wish to highlight (nails, locks, corners, brackets etc).

On the interiors, if the paper is gone or so gone it can't be rescued, I clean and coat with lacquer or line the interior with some type of heavy fabric like corduroy or brushed velvet.

You do not need to use murphys soap or rehydrate the wood. If you prefer to use an oil rather than a lacquer or shellac on the wood make sure you do not use a non drying oil like old english or lemon oil--no good--use an oil that will dry, tung oil for example. Have fun.
