Carol,
My wife and I have a trunk from the 1870-1880's being restored now, it is also the etched tin,wooden slats and dome top with rust on the bottom.
Most all the parts (tin,leather,corners,handles,hinges,locks,tacks,nails and paper) can be purchased via the internet today...
Most people I have talked to say use a wire brush on the metal and mild cleaner with light sand paper on the wood, with a clear coat on both after you finish. If you try this yourself remember the nails are usually nailed in from the outside and the bottom sides are bent over to help secure them, this makes them a bear to remove and restore...
