For Jim Schooley/shellac, brushable lacquer

I read a post you wrote to someone who was trying to achieve a high-gloss finish and you said you'd achieved this look using shellac and brushable lacquer. I'm new to all of this, but I have an old chair I'd like to get this look with. I want to use black -- is the lacquer the substance that has the color and the shellac what I'd use to finish it with? Is there a source you'd recommend I go to for instructions? Thanks, Staci
