Milk paint would never show up gummy .Skimmed milk was always used mixed with powered pigments(which you can still buy).It goes on very thinly ,the solid color you see on very old furniture is the result of many coats(from a time when people had more time). In workshops I have taught, powdered milk mixed with pigments and just enough water to make it brushable have given people good results.I have never mixed oils, thinners or driers with this paint,no need for by it's self forms a very hard coat(casin=milk).
