Cast iron base (?)

I have two cast iron bases,I would like to know what they were made for.Their bottoms are like a garden urn then there are two arm that come up in an lyre shape that end in a ring.Over all it is 22 inches high, the base is about 10 inches wide, with the top ring being 15 inches. The number 14 is cast into the top ring. The body is in the shape of a turning.cast into the bottom of the base are the words: PAT' NOV 15 1881 --- PECK BRO'S & CO NEW YORK & NEW HAVEN.There were many layers of paint on it which I striped off to find the bottom layer was a shiny white which I replaced. The second one is of the same shape and size but cast from a different mould, with some detail differences.I have a picture of it posted at the garden web http://forums2.gardenweb.com/forums/gardgal/msg1117343728142.jpg I will use them in the garden for potted plant holders, but until I find out just what their intended use was it's going to drive me nuts.
