In Response To: Gilt or gild? And how to restore. (Nancy)

Giled is the word for metalic leaf applied on a surface, but it is also used for metallic painted surfaces. There are many different colors of gold available from craft shops and furniture finish suppliers you should try to find one that matches the base color of the gold on your frame. Many times a glaze is used over the gold to age it or to add highlights usually umber or raw umber, but any color can be used. Gilding with gold leaf is not something that you want to try unless you can take a clss somewhere, it is not easy to do and can take a long time to master.
