Gilt or gild? And how to restore.

I am hoping someone can clear me up on the difference between gilt and when something is gilded. I have an old mirror, described as gilded paint, that needs some touch up. Are there products one can just paint on over the whole frame, or is it more complicated? Is gilt (gold leaf?) more difficult and should it be attempted by a beginner? Any information would be greatly appreciated and I thank you in advance. Regards, Nancy
