Old cedar chests are popular as gifts. I've had six come through my shop in the past few months - mostly Lane. They fall into two types: cedar inside and out, with a cedar veneer skirt, and knots showing; cedar inside/mahogany outside, with legs, hardware, and decorative trim, made to look like a Queen Anne Lowboy or other piece of furniture.
Yours sounds like the latter. The exterior is mahogany veneer and the carved legs, if any, are maple.
You first need to replace/repair the missing veneer. A grain filler may also be necessary for the mahogany. Next, apply a sealer coat of diluted shellac. Next, a gel stain (I think Bartley's works best). You can selectively restain any areas which are too light, until you have a uniform result. Last, apply protective coat(s). I prefer several diluted coats of either shellac or varnish.
If yours is an old Lane, get a new lock. The ones built before 1987 have been recalled for safety reasons.
