Depending on what color you are trying to achieve you will need to apply a base stain color using a pigmented stain then seal and apply a glaze coat of color over the sealer then a thin top coat then perhaps more glaze sealed then maybe a toner to level aout any remaining areas of color dfference. Each coat of glaze or tone should be kept as thin as possible to keep from ending up with a mubby painted look.
