The color that you see when you wet the case with mineral spirist is the color that you will see when you put a finish on it. I would use a seal coat of 3# shellac and then lacquer for top coats. If the color you are getting is a dark brown with reddish overtones, you can probably get closs by stainging with a dark walnut stain sealing and thein glazing with asphaltum disolved in mineral spirits topcoated with lacquer. Asphaltum can be bought as roofing patch, get the non fibre kind.
