ANTIQUE FURNITURE RESTORATION DISCUSSION BOARD

Old dresser and chest

I have a dresser that was built around the turn of the twentieth century. It's in pretty good shape except for the top which is scratched and marred. What would be the best course of action to give it a facelift without distroying it's value? Also, I have a family heirloom chest of drawers that was built in the mid 1800's. It is dirty but I don't have any idea what finish was used back then or what to do with it. Both peices have the original finish on them and I would like to maintain that.
