It sounds as if you have ribbon mahogany, and no you didin't mess up. If you turn the drawer wiht a raking light on it the ribbon will fade and strengthen as the drawer is rotated. I would say to continue cleaning and try to get it all the same approximate color. Then a coat of paste wax will bring out a soft gloss.
