You need ot first remove any coating that is on the lamp. Most of the time lamps are lacquered to reduce tarnishing. Use lacquer thinner to clean the lamp. Polissth the brass, then polish any bare spots to 1000 grit with wet dry sand paper then use a lacquer based metallic paint to cover the bare spots then coat the entire lamp with clear lacquer.
