The only foolproof way I have found to get the musty smell out of an old trunk is to line the bottom of the trunk with tongue and groove cedar. Closet lining kits can be purchased at most home centers for under $20. Cut the board to the desired length, glue and clamp together and, when dry, glue to the bottom of the trunk. Of course, all old lining material should be removed first and the inside of the trunk cleaned and sanded. Once the cedar is in the bottom of the trunk, the sides and top can be relined either with paper or fabric. I have also heard of using a bag of kitty litter to absorb the odors which may help for a while but won't be a permanent solution like using the cedar lining.
