Shellac on staircase

We are refinishing the staircase in our 1918 home and using alcohol to remove the alligatoring of the old shellac. We are planning on adding a new coating of shellac. Will shellac alone on the stair treds be able to withstand the traffic? Also shellac has a fairly glossy sheen, how can one reduce the sheen to a more satin finish?
