What you describe sounds like this thin linoleum type sheeting I have had to work on. After a while it becomes brittle and can crack, so careful. The point was to make a light waterproof trunk. Why do you need to take out the nails? Locate the clenched point and bend it open, this will break it off most often, then you can push the rest out from inside. Next you will need some more nails, but one problem at a time. The stuff I'm talking about looks and feels like very thin Masonite or very dense chipboard, if so we can go from there.
